In 1735, the Spaniards rediscovered platinum in Colombia. As the grey metal was still rarely used at the time, it was given the name platina (‘little silver’), a pejorative diminutive of the Spanish word plata (‘silver’).
The formation of the diminutive symbolises the lack of esteem to which the precious metal was exposed for many centuries. In the 19th century, the chemical composition of platinum was analysed and as a result it was given its rightful place among the precious metals. Nowadays, platinum is a highly sought-after material for jewellery making, as it is of high quality and extremely durable, harder and more robust than gold and silver and, above all, it retains its colour. The precious metal is found in nature around 30 times rarer than gold, making it a symbol of exclusivity and particularity.
